AUGERS

Agricon manufactures conveyors for use in most industries
Our standard augers are 165mm in diameter and 3m or 4m in length. They have a mixed grain capacity of 4000kg/hour.

Auger construction
Auger conveyors, sometimes called screw conveyors, are the most common method of handling grain on farms. Augers can be fixed or mobile, are of simple construction and are easy to operate and maintain. They are available in various types and sizes, designed for different jobs and are powered by either a tractor power take-off, electric motor, petrol engine or hydraulic drive.

Factors affecting auger throughput
The throughput of an auger depends mainly on the auger diameter, pitch, elevation and speed. The choke length and design, screw clearance and roughness and the moisture content of the grain also affect the throughput, though these effects are less predictable. As a result, augers that appear identical can have differing throughputs.

Auger safety and usage hazards
Augers can be a safety hazard on the farm. All auger intakes should be covered by a grate, designed to keep hands, feet and clothing from contacting the auger flighting or being caught between the flighting and the case.

The grate should easily support the weight of a man. There is a risk of serious injury if auger drive assemblies and screw flighting are left exposed. All moving parts must be shielded in some way; this includes drive rods, gears, chains and belts.

Make certain that no person is in the unloading bin when the auger is started. Disconnect power to augers before entering a bin, and wear a dust mask when exposed to grain dust.

When moving mobile augers, watch all overhead clearances, particularly of power lines, and also branches and building entrances. Mobile augers must be firmly placed on the ground before operating.
