Basic auger construction
The auger is made up of a casing inside which is an auger flight is attached to a central core. The flight revolves between bearings inside the casing. Grain is fed into the auger at the choke or inlet end and discharged at the opposite end.
Augers displace a given volume of material, so that the throughput (tonnes/hour) of an auger will vary depending upon the bulk density of the material.
There are many types of auger flights, each one manufactured for a particular type of material to be conveyed. The most common type for conveying farm grain is the single-flight standard-pitch right-hand auger.
A single-flight standard-pitch auger flight
Auger flights with pitch spacing equal to the diameter are considered standard and are suitable for most augers of conventional horizontal design.
Other types of auger flights are:
• Double-flight standard pitch (Figure 3)
• Single-flight standard pitch (Figure 4)
• Single-flight variable pitch (Figure 5)
• Ribbon-flight for gummy materials (Figure 6)
Double-flight standard-pitch auger flight
A double flight produces a smooth gentle flow of certain materials. It is recommended for augers for post-hole digging and similar applications.
Single-flight half-pitch auger/light
Half-pitch augers are recommended for inclined or vertical conveying and for materials that are very free-flowing.
Single-flight variable-pitch auger flight
Flights with pitch progressively increased are used to draw fine, free-flowing materials uniformly from the entire length of the feed opening.
Ribbon-flight auger flight
Ribbon flights are excellent for sticky or gummy materials because the gap between the flight and the pipe prevents the material from building up.
